Why are they essential?

• Modern assault rifles have a short barrel and the extra distance given by the bayonet give more safety to the soldier.
  
  
• Bayonets are a good tool to protect depots/buildings/installations from crowds/thefts in humanitarian missions by using the "scare-off" effect.
  
  
• They are a multi-purpose tool.
